Battery storage in a new home, what to weigh up

A home battery is a building decision as much as an energy decision. Whether it earns its place depends on your electricity use and your solar, but where it sits and how it is wired is a question for the build, and those parts are far cheaper to resolve before construction than after.

This article covers the building side of battery storage, the part that has to be planned into the home rather than added to it.

Location is not an afterthought

A battery has real requirements for where it can sit. Four constraints usually decide the location.

It needs ventilation and a temperature range it can live within. That rules out an unventilated cupboard or a wall that bakes in afternoon sun. It needs separation from habitable and sleeping areas under the relevant standards.

It needs weather protection if it is mounted outside, and access for installation and service.

A garage wall, a plant area or a dedicated external location usually works. The kitchen wall a homeowner first pictures usually does not.

Settling the location early matters because it drives the electrical layout. The battery, the inverter and the switchboard want to be reasonably close together, and the cable paths between them are easiest to set while the walls are open.

The electrical design behind it

A battery is part of a system. The inverter, the switchboard, the metering and the circuits that stay live during a grid outage all have to be designed together. If you want specific circuits to keep running when the grid is down, the lights in key rooms, the refrigerator, a data connection, those circuits have to be identified and wired to the backed-up supply. That is a documentation decision, not a switch you flick later.

Install now or provision for later

Not every homeowner wants to commit to a battery at the start, and the economics continue to move. The middle path is to provision.

Set aside the location. Run the conduit. Size the switchboard. Leave the electrical design ready, so the battery can be added later without opening walls or reworking the board.

The cost of provisioning during construction is modest. The cost of retrofitting a home that was not prepared for it is not.

Where this sits in the build

Battery storage belongs in the early conversations about building performance, alongside orientation, glazing, insulation and how the home will use energy over its life. The location and the electrical design are settled in the Pre-Construction Program, before the work that would be expensive to undo.

If you are weighing up a battery, decide early whether you are installing now or provisioning for later, so the location and the wiring can be set while the walls are still open.
