A Balwyn restaurant, delivered as a joinery-led room

Enoteca Boccaccio is a restaurant and retail fit-out on Balwyn Road, designed by Mim Design. The interior reads as a single carefully-drawn room. The joinery holds the wine, the bar and the seating, and the material register stays tight.

Timber, stone and warm brass carry the interior. Bottles and glassware are held on furniture rather than shelving, so the room reads as calm even when the space is full. Lighting is set to lift the labels without flattening the timber.

The bar itself is drawn as a piece of furniture rather than an installation. Seating is set close, and the sightline from the street pulls through the length of the room. Photography by Peter Clarke Photography.

On site, the fit-out is delivered around a live retail context, with the joinery installed as furniture pieces and the wet services threaded through without breaking the interior calm. Featured by The Local Project. Winner, Belle Interior Design Awards 2023, best hospitality interior.
